My 10 Favorite Albums of 2007

Hey everybody; I'm finally going to be doing something I've meant to do for a while now, which is that I'm going to be re-posting my top ten music and movie lists for last year.  I originally posted them on my Facebook page earlier in the year, but these new versions have been updated to include the albums and movies I hadn't been able to check out at the time.  In other words, these versions will be the definitive versions.  I'm starting with the list of 2007's favorite albums.  Later in the week I'll post my list of 2007's favorite movies.

My 10 Favorite Albums of 2007:

1. Tegan and Sara - "The Con":  Big surprise, right?  This was the first album I checked out by the duo, and after a week of listening to it nonstop I declared them my new favorite band.  Consequently, this also became my favorite album (their others are all great as well).  It's hard to accurately describe the sound of T&S; it's kind of a crazy amalgamation of indie, punk rock and singer/songwriter acoustic.  In all honesty, they're really the kind of band you just have to check out for yourself.  But I have yet to find anybody who didn't like T&S after I introduced them to their music.  My Favorite Track: "The Con."

2. The Birthday Massacre - "Walking With Strangers":  Not only do TBM have a great name, but they look and sound like they stepped straight out of the '80s: synth-heavy, old-school Goth (you know, before Emo came along and watered it down) and totally glammed-out.  And yet, their music sounds fresh and completely modern at the same time.  TBM are dark without being depressing; I would compare listening to their music to watching a really fun '80s horror film, or going to a prom for serial killers.  On second thought, maybe it'd be better if you just checked them out for yourself.  My Favorite Track: "Goodnight."

3. Against Me! - "New Wave":  A lot of AM's older fans gave the band a lot of crap when they signed to a major label, but "New Wave" proves it was unwarranted.  They created a punchy, powerful rock and roll album.  If Bruce Springsteen was a punk-rocker, this is what his music would sound like.  And it doesn't hurt that they brought in Tegan Quin, of Tegan and Sara, to duet on "Borne of the FM Waves of the Heart," aka my favorite song of 2007.  My Favorite Track: "Borne on the FM Waves of the Heart" (duh).

4. Paramore - "RIOT!":  I've been a big Paramore fan pretty much the moment their first album, "All We Know Is Falling," was released in the summer of 2005.  When I first listened to "RIOT!," their sophomore release, I knew they'd become huge... and I'm glad I turned out to be right.  And as their latest stuff on the "Twilight" soundtrack proves, they're only getting better with time.  My Favorite Track: "That's What You Get."

5. Kittie - "Funeral for Yesterday":  Kittie were my favorite band before Tegan and Sara, and it's a little ironic that the year that changed is also the year they released their best album.  Originally more of a full-fledged metal band, Kittie embraced more of their softer and atmospheric side for this album.  Lead singer Morgan Lander almost completely dropped her metal-death screams and instead focuses more on singing instead.  It pays off; the material on "Funeral for Yesterday" is more accomplished and inspired than anything else the band has put out previously.  It's a pretty bleak album, though, so you might want to take it in smaller doses.  My Favorite Track: "Everything that Could Have Been."

6. Anberlin - "Cities":  Along with Skillet, Anberlin are a band that understand how to make spiritually minded music without letting preaching get in the way of completely rocking out.  The surprising thing about "Cities" is that, unlike most bands of their ilk, the album is very synth-heavy... what's even more surprising is that it works incredibly well.  I also had the good fortune of seeing them in concert that same year, and not only are they an amazing live band, but lead singer Stephen Christian just might be the nicest guy I've ever met.  My Favorite Track: "Reclusion."

7. Kanye West - "Graduation":  Since Eminem's taken a long leave of absence, Kanye West has become the rapper liked by people who don't normally like hip-hop.  That's because Mr. West isn't afraid of being different and trying new things (mainly synth-based tunes this time).  He's the guy that everybody else in the rap game looks up to.  Even Lil Wayne, who is getting more praise and selling more records than anybody these days, considers Kanye to be the top dog in hip-hop.  West may be on top right now, but "Graduation" sounds like it came straight out of the future.  My Favorite Track: "Flashing Lights."

8. Thrice - "The Alchemy Index: Vol. I & II - Fire and Water":  I'm pretty sure there aren't any other bands who can make four-EP project devoted to each element and have them sound this good.  This release contains the first two EPs, which revolve around fire and water respectively.  "Fire" is straight-up heavy, take-no-prisoners post-punk, while "Water" is slower-paced and more of a haunting, synth-based experience (synths sure seem to be popular in 2007, don't they?).  What Thrice have been able to accomplish musically on these first two EPs is amazing.  But will the second two, "Earth" and "Air," make 2008's list?  Only time will tell...  My Favorite Track: "Firebreather" (Fire); "The Whaler" (Water).

9. Northern State - "Can I Keep This Pen?":  The best way to describe Northern State?  Imagine a female version of the Beastie Boys.  These ladies possess the same musical inventiveness, clever wordplay and penchant for being silly and serious at the same time as their Brooklyn brothers-in-arms.  This album takes the more straight-ahead hip-hop of their first two albums and adds a good deal of indie and punk-rock into the mix.  The result sounds like nothing else out there.  I saw them live opening for Tegan and Sara and they blew everyone in the crowd away, including me.  If you're up for checking out something completely different and original, give these girls a few minutes of your time.  My Favorite Track: "Sucka Mofo."

10. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Is Is":  This is actually just a five-song EP, but it's hands down the best music the band has ever released.  It's still the kind of no-holds-barred rock and roll the YYYs do so well, but there's a darker and more atmospheric side showcased on these tracks than on their previous full-length albums, "Fever to Tell" and "Show Your Bones."  If this was a full-length album it would have charted a lot higher on my list; it's essentially like a really great-tasting snack that makes you hungry for more without actually filling you up.  Hopefully the band's next album will retain the same awesome flavor.  My Favorite Track: "Isis."

What's on DVD and CD this week - 10/21/08

Here are today's new DVD and CD releases.

My picks for DVD:

• The Strangers - Looking for a really scary movie to watch this Halloween?  Well, this movie might be what you're looking for.  A couple spends a night at a cabin in the woods, where they are terrorized by three masked teens.  Harkens back to the old-school horror classics like "Halloween" and "Black Christmas."
• Sold Out: A Threevening With Kevin Smith - This is the third "Evening With Kevin Smith" DVD, in which the well-known director of movies like "Clerks," "Dogma," and the upcoming "Zach and Miri Make a Porno" goes out to various colleges and public forums and talks to the fans.  These DVDs are hilarious; Kevin Smith ranks with the best stand-up comedians in terms of humor and storytelling.
• The Incredible Hulk - Okay, I wasn't the biggest fan of this movie (sorry, but I just don't think the Hulk makes a very good hero... he's much better as a villain), but it definitely has some pretty great moments.  Edward Norton is always great whenever he's onscreen.  Plus, if you're already a big Hulk fan then you'll probably dig the film a lot more than me.  No "Iron Man" or "Dark Knight," but still worth seeing.
• L.A. Ink: Season 1, Part 2 - Why am I recommending this?  Come on, you know why... it's because Kat Von D is super-hot; that's why.

My Picks on CD:

• Skillet - "Comatose Comes Alive" (CD/DVD) - These guys and girls rank alongside Anberlin as the best "Christian" rock band currently out there.  This is a live album, and it's chock full of some of their best songs.  If you've never heard of them, pick up their most recent album "Comatose" and be blown away, and then go pick this album up and get blown again.
• Gang Gang Dance - "Saint Dymphna" - I heard a cut from this album on a Pop Candy podcast and thought it sounded intriguing, so I checked out more stuff from this album and I'm impressed.  It's very different; kind of a techno/alternative/dance/world music mix.  But it's also a lot of fun.  Definitely check this album out for yourself, but I think a lot you will really like it.

What's new on DVD and CD this week - 10/7/08

Here are the new releases on DVD and CD this week.

My picks for DVD:

"The Visitor" - Richard Jenkins ("Six Feet Under," "Burn After Reading") stars in this film about a recently widowed college professor who discovers a couple of illegal aliens living in his New York apartment.  This film was a sleeper hit earlier this year, and there has been talk of an Oscar nomination for Jenkins.  Worth seeing.

"Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty" - It's another classic Walt Disney movie finally being released on DVD.  And you better buy it now, because eventually Disney will throw it back into the "vault."

"30 Rock: Season 2" - Admit it, you've loved watching Tina Fey portraying Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live" recently.  Now it's time to see just how funny she is when starring in this beloved yet ratings-challenged series.  The new season starts October 30th, so now is a great time to get caught up?

"Robot Chicken: Season 3" - This strange, weird and brilliant series from Seth Green ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Family Guy") is some of the funniest stuff you'll see on TV now.  Check this out and then, if you haven't already, check out their awesome "Star Wars" spoof.

My picks for CD:

Rise Against: "Appeal to Reason" - If I were to compile a list of my favorite musicians, this Chicago-based punk band would easily make the top ten.  They do punchy, energetic, melodic punk with a message better than anybody else.  This may be their best album yet, so you owe it to yourself to pick it up.

The Streets: "Everything is Borrowed" - The Streets is a white, British rapper named Mike Skinner, but in saying that I've told you nothing about his music.  This is because British hip-hop is different from American; it's actually more of a melting pot of rap, punk, techno, R&B, and most other musical genres.  Skinner's rhymes detail hard-living working class daily life and everything goes along with it.  This is music worth checking out whether you consider yourself a hip-hop fan or not.

What's new on DVD and CD - 9/30/08

Here are this week's DVD and CD releases.

My picks for DVD:

• Iron Man - The biggest (and most pleasant) surprise of the summer.  No one really expected this film to be as good or as successful as it was.  The credit goes to director John Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. for making a film that is truly a big, fun and NOT dumb action flick.
  
• Forgetting Sarah Marshall - This Judd Apatow-produced film is the funniest I've seen all year.  Jason Segel, who both wrote the film and stars in it, creates a character that you can both laugh at and sympathize with.  Add a terrific supporting cast (Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell) and a beautiful Hawaiian setting, and you've got a truly excellent romantic comedy anyone can enjoy... provided you can handle a WHOLE lotta Segel.

Jack's Mannequin: "The Glass Passenger" - The very long-awaited follow-up to JM's first album, "Everything in Transit," JM mastermind Andrew McMahon has crafted an album filled with beautiful indie-pop-rock songs sure to please both old and new fans alike.  While much of the album deals with McMahon's very public battle with leukemia, the prevalent attitude is one of hope and faith; this an upbeat album about very dark things.

What's new on DVD and CD this week: 9/23/08

Here are this week's DVD and CD releases for this week... along with my personal picks.

My DVD picks:

• "L.A. Confidential" - This modern-day classic hasn't been available on DVD for a while, so now is a great chance for all of you who've never seen it.  Kevin Spacey, Guy Pierce, Kim Basinger (who won an Oscar for this film) and a pre-"Gladiator" Russell Crowe star in a sordid tale of sex, scandal, betrayal and corruption in old-school Hollywood.
• "The Mother of Tears" - The newest film by Italian horror legend Dario Argento ("Suspiria") stars his daughter Asia ("XXX" - the film with Vin Diesel, not a skin flick) as a young archeologist who finds an ancient urn that, as it turns out, houses the spirit of an evil witch.  When they accidentally let it out, lots of really bad stuff starts happening.  This is the last film in Argento's loose Three Mothers trilogy involving witches (the others are "Suspiria" and "Inferno"), and as the rest of his films go, it's chock full of shockingly extreme violence (and probably a fair amount of sex/nudity as well; just a warning).  Not for the faint of heart, but fans of extreme horror should enjoy it.
• "Run, Fat Boy, Run" - A loser who left his pregnant wife at the altar years ago tries to win her love back by competing in a city-wide marathon.  I'm not honestly not sure how good this film is, but I'm still recommending it because it stars Simon Pegg ("Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz"), and he'll be funny no matter how good or bad the rest of the film is.  Also, this film was directed by former "Friends" star David Schwimmer.

My CD/music picks:

• The Action Design: "Never Say"  - I love this band because one half of it (including frontwoman Emily Whitehearst/"Agent M") were originally part of Tsunami Bomb, one of my favorite punk bands.  TAD take TB's melody-heavy punk and mix it with new wave/techno elements to create a new, very enjoyable sound.  Great music for hanging out with friends and/or crazy dance parties.
• Jenny Lewis: "Acid Tongue" - The second solo album from the Rilo Kiley frontwoman isn't much different from her first album, "Rabbit Fur Coat."  Lewis' music is a mix of rock, blues and alt-country that provides a relaxing experience, while her lyrics explore everything from love, bad relationships and spirituality.  A great album to kick back and relax with.
• The Pussycat Dolls: "Doll Domination" - Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails once compared pop music to birthday cake, saying "everyone likes birthday cake.  But you can't only eat birthday cake; otherwise you'll get a stomach ache."  If that's true, then this is my helping of birthday cake this week.  I like the Pussycat Dolls because they're so goofy and over the top that it's impossible to take them seriously (and I'm fairly confident that's their intention).  On their sophomore album, the Dolls team up with the right producers to give them plenty of pumped up dance tracks (and a few decent slower songs).  And if you pick up the deluxe edition, you'll get five extra tracks, each one featuring lead vocals by a different member of the group (this is the first time all the girls are singing on the record; PCD lead Nicole Scherzinger sang everything on the first album).  The perfect record for people who like birthday cake and don't take themselves too seriously.
